Bodywork - Page Six

The insides of the cab corners are totally fabricated. I have them painted in Chassis Saver

paint, and the skin is in place. The following pictures show the progression. What they

DON'T show, is that I had to make new "holders" for the backing plate for the hinge

screws. After having made them, I inadvertently forgot to weld the first one in place,

BEFORE putting the skin on. It was a real pain, situating it, holding it and the backing

plate in place, holding a flashlight so I could see to weld, wiggling the welding gun in,

all while wearing a welding helmet! But, I got it in. At least I caught it before I welded

the skin on the second side, and it was a LOT easier with the skin off!

I still need to make two "filler plates" for the bottom of the cab corners, and cut the bottom

of the cab corners off, but for now, I am going to build a wheeled wooden stand, for setting

the cab on, so I can do the rest of the bodywork, and let it sit for a while. I am ordering all the

piece-parts for the front end, and I am going to concentrate on that, so I can get the front end

back under the frame, and the motor/tranny in place. The cab can wait...

News Flash! I lied!!! I decided to go ahead and make the filler plates...I made templates out of cardboard, formed them with steel, put in a weep hole, painted them with Chassis saver inside, and welded them in. Here's a few pics, pre-weld:

I used Northern Classic Trucks cab corners, and overall, I was pleased with them. However,

on the driver's side, the dimensions were off a little bit, perhaps 1/8". Doesn't seem like much,

but it caused the bottom outside, to stick out just a tad too much. I would have to move the

entire bend, to make it right, but since it is covered almost totally by the fender, I will not

touch it. It will probably not be noticable, since you can't see both sides at the same time,

but it did take some time to make it as correct as possible. The quality is superb, though,

and I heartily recommend their products, if the rest of what they sell is of the same quality,

and I'm sure it is. The have a large line of sheetmetal for the old Ford trucks.
